Boston Public Market Seasonal Cookbook

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

Living in Boston, we’re so lucky to have fresh and locally grown produce available all year round, thanks to the Boston Public Market! The indoor market is open all 12 months of the year and is home to 38 vendors which include local farms offering meat and produce, as well as gourmet purveyors. I make a weekly stop at the market, whether it’s to enjoy a Nutty Greens smoothie from Mother Juice or to pick up groceries from Siena Farms or Stillman Quality Meats.

I recently got my hands on a copy of the Boston Public Market’s new cookbook! Organized by season, the cookbook highlights which items you can typically find in a CSA during those months. For example, in the Winter we can look forward to enjoying items like bok choy, brussels sprouts, gourds, mushrooms, beets, carrots, broccoli, potatoes and more! The cookbook was created by the Boston Public Market Association Staff and it includes over 100 recipes and highlights on their vendors. It makes for a great holiday gift (or gift for yourself) and is another wonderful way that you can support the market.

The recipe that Kyle and I are most looking forward to making this winter is the Sweet Potato with Sausage and Arugula dish (recipe below). We look forward to picking up sweet potatoes from Siena Farms, sausage from Stillman Quality Meats, and cheese from Jasper Hill Cellars.

SWEET POTATO WITH SAUSAGE & ARUGULA
Serves 4

4 medium sweet potatoes
1/2 pound Hot Italian sausage
1 bunch green onions, chives, or small shallot; diced
1 bag arugula
1 small wedge of Alpha Tolman cheese
Flake salt and black pepper

1. Prick sweet potatoes with a fork several times. Bake in oven at 400 degrees for 45 minutes to 1 hour.

2. While potatoes cook, brown sausage in large skillet.

3. Cut sweet potatoes in half lengthwise and serve with a spoonful of browned sausage, a handful of arugula and grated cheese. Season with salt and pepper and garnish with green onions.
